Study Options
This is the screen you're greeted with when you open a deck. The top area displays some stats about your deck, the middle area allows you to customize the way you want to review, and the bottom button will start reviewing.
The study options are not saved until you click 'start reviewing'.
Statistics & Basic Options
The top left hand side shows some statistics. The numbers on the left in black show the number for the last session, or the previous day. The numbers in blue on the right show the number for the current session, or the current day.
- Cards/session
- How many cards have been studied in the session. If you see the same card twice, it will be counted twice.
- Cards/day
- How many cards have been seen over the day.
- Time/day
- The time spent reviewing over the day.
The top right hand side shows cards that are due for review.
- Reviews due
- The number of reviews that should be done that day, in order for optimum retention. If you've come back from a holiday and have a large number of cards due, you don't have to answer all the cards in one day.
- New today
- Anki shows you 20 new cards per day by default. This number shows the number of new cards left for the day.
- New total
- The total number of cards in the deck that haven't been seen before.
The bottom section lets you customize your day and session limits.
- New cards per day
- The maximum number of new cards Anki will show you per day. Increase if you want to learn more that day, but be careful not to learn too much, or the reviews over the next few days will be painful. Set to 0 to turn off new cards.
- Time limit (mins)
- The number of minutes to do a session for. The default is 10 minutes. When a session is finished, the study options page will be displayed again, and you can compare how well you did over previous sessions, and then keep studying or stop for the day.
- Question limit (reps)
- The number of questions to ask before returning to the study options page. This counts questions (repetitions, or 'reps'), rather than cards, so if you fail a card and answer it again, it will count as two.
More
- New card order
- You can choose whether new cards should be displayed randomly, or in the order they were added to the deck.
- New card time
- You can choose if new cards should be distributed throughout reviews (say, 1 new card every 4 review cards), or whether you want new cards to be shown at the end or beginning of a session.
- Review card order
-
- Oldest first
- Cards with the longest intervals are shown first. This ensures that the cards you've invested the most time in are not forgotten, and by making the first half of a series of reviews easier, lessens the chances you'll grow demotivated or end up with a huge queue.
- Newest first
- Cards with the shortest intervals are shown first. This ensures recently studied material is shown again before it's forgotten. Caution should be used when using this review method, as if you keep introducing new material into your deck, and never clear your queue, the oldest cards will never have a chance to be seen.
- In order due
- Cards appear in the order they are due to appear. This mode ensures that all cards are delayed for as little time as possible.
- In random order
- Cards appear in a random order. Useful if you are studying related material in batches, and 'in order due' is not random enough for your needs.
- Failed card handling
- Allows you to customise when you will be shown cards marked as "Again" during study.
- Show failed cards soon
- Show failed cards after 10 minutes. If there are no new cards left to study, and all reviews are complete, then show remaining failed cards earlier.
- Show failed cards at end
- Delay showing failed cards until all reviews and new cards for the day are done.
- Show failed cards in 10 minutes
- Always wait 10 minutes. If there are no other cards to study and 10 minutes haven't elapsed, show the congratulations screen.
- Show failed cards in 8 hours
- As above, but wait 8 hours.
- Show failed cards in 3 days
- As above, but wait 3 days.
- Custom failed card handling
Use the options set in Settings>Deck Properties>Advanced Preferences
For similar behaviour to Mnemosyne, or SuperMemo with the final drill enabled, choose "show failed cards at end". For similar behaviour to SuperMemo with the final drill disabled, choose "show failed cards in 3 days".
